Elementary School: Grades 1 - 5
Our Elementary School program is meticulously designed to incorporate the latest knowledge about teaching and learning as well as child development. We ensure that, during these key formative years, much time and energy is channeled into providing each girl with the best possible foundation for future academic, social, physical, and emotional development. By the time our girls have completed grade 5, they will have developed the necessary skills to move on confidently to our middle years program.
Academics
The Elementary School program involves a child oriented, hands-on, multi-sensory approach to learning. Our subjects (math, science, reading, writing, and social studies) are taught in a multi-disciplinary approach. The format of instruction includes whole group, small group and one on one time for each child. The use of learning centers in our activities-based approach allows our teachers and teacher assistants the time and ability to work with children who need extra support or extension of skills. Our activities and lessons vary to meet the needs of all of our students. AAG strongly believes every opportunity should be utilized to meet each girl's educational potential. In addition, each classroom teacher meets with the administration team weekly for pupil progress meetings, where the needs, concerns and strengths of each child are discussed.
At AAG, we believe that our children need to develop a solid foundation during the elementary years to ensure later success in school. For that reason, we concentrate heavily on literacy in the elementary school. Our reading program includes guided reading, Accelerated Reader, and learning centers. The girls' progress is continuously evaluated. Their progress is shared with parents through the books they take home weekly and quarterly report cards. We encourage parents to be a part of our learning team by reading with their daughter each evening.
Other valuable members of our elementary team are the specialist teachers. At AAG, we have specialist teachers for our art, music, physical education, information communication technology, and a library media program. These teachers work very closely with the classroom teachers to integrate topics and subjects into these creative outlets. In addition to specialist teachers, we have two technicians which assist our classroom teachers in integrating technology into the classroom. Our lab technician arranges weekly visits to one of our fully functional science labs. These visits integrate topics being covered in the class with hands on experiments and demonstrations. Our ICT technician integrates the topics being covered in our ICT classes into the classroom and assists teachers in integrating technology into the curriculum by utilizing laptop computers and interactive whiteboards.
Children's attitudes toward education begin to develop during these elementary school years, and AAG's lively, activity-oriented program nurtures the beginnings of a life-long love of learning.
